The Day You Set Me Free (Poem)

The Day You Set Me Free

I’m stuck in a cage that I handmade for myself.
I’m dwelling in these worries and doubts.
But here you come holding the key.
And I can feel myself rising up.
Up off the floor where all my hopes died.
I tilt my head up toward the sky.
I fly.
I am free.
All because you loved me.
You sacrificed everything in the world to set me free from my own prison of shame.
You broke these chains.
Reminding me who I can become.
I overcome.
I touch the sky and the clouds with no trace of a frown.
I never want to come down.
You stand there waiting patiently for me.
Waiting until I come back to you.
I swoop back down with my gifted wings of life.
And touch the ground with one end in sight.
My heart leaps as I run toward you.
My Savior.
My Creator.
The one who set me free.
My Father.
My Brother.
My Family.
You open your arms and I reach my home.
I am not alone.
Because you are here, taking away all my fear.
Everything might not make sense in my life.
But I know you will be with me through whatever strife.
No matter the storm or the grief or pain.
All you need to do is call my name.
For this, I will love you forevermore.
And I know you will do the same.
